A team of researchers has discovered a new vulnerability in the automaker’s keyless entry mechanisms that could enable hackers to wirelessly unlock the doors of approximately 100 million vehicles. 

 

A piece of radio hardware intercepts information sent from a vehicle’s key fob to the car’s lock. Hackers can then use that intercepted information to create a duplicate of the key fob.  A similar vulnerability was also found in cars manufactured by Ford, Nissan, Mitsubishi, and others. 

The good news?

These hacks aren’t easy to pull off, and duplicating a key doesn’t necessarily mean it will work with every VW vehicle.

Until VW figures out a fix for the problem, researchers suggest ditching the wireless fobs in favor of the old lock and key.
